Question Drywall paper coming off

We removed a wooden ply that was nailed and pasted above our fireplace by the previous owner. Now the drywall paper is coming off from where ever they had put glue. As the paper is layered, I could peel some of the paper off and still not expose the wall. But at some places the paper is thicker than some other areas. It's not noticeable but if you ran your hand don it - you would know.

How can I finish this wall ? It's about 4 ft X 3 ft area. I really don't want to install a new wall. This is my first home and I am a novice when it comes to home repairs

Thanks for your help!

If you want it smooth then scrape off all the glue, sand the areas where the paper is comming off to get rid of the fuzzy stuff, then skim the wall with a thin coat of mud. Let dry then apply another coat. Let dry and sand. Touch up any weird spots.
