Texture a patched area on a wall

I am looking for some tricks for matching a wall texture for an area of of wall that has been patched. I have purchased some of the canned spray texture for small areas but the wall area that I spray does not match the old texture and I can tell where the patched area is. The canned spray also leaves some small lumps that look like they have a crater in the middle.
I have also rented a compressor and texture hopper to apply to a larger wall area. This worked better but it is more expensive and messy for smaller areas. The texture also does not match the old exactly.
Any tips or URL's would be greatly appreaciated!

What kind of texture is on your wall? It sounds like knockdown or perhaps orange peal because you mentioned the hopper. That is the only way to go. The can spray stuff does not work. Make sure your patch is finished correctly or it will show. You may want to take a sponge and wet sand the edges. Really feather the edges out. then spray a larger area than the patch. It's very messy so make sure the area is masked off well.
