baseboards and shoe molding

i am redoing my baseboards and shoe molding in my hallway (all sheetrock)...is it necessary to use any caulk on the trim before i paint???

also, if i need to caulk, what is the best for the job (i am covering will oil based paint)

Do not use caulk. You want to use either wood filler or joint compound. Caulk does not end up smooth, and it is not sandable.

You do want to use a filler to take care of any seams and nails. Do not rely on paint to fill these.
