Best "recipe" for a wall texture mix?
I am getting ready to texture the walls in our new bathroom. (or, at least I'm gonna' try!) I have the gun, compressor, etc., but what is the best "recipe" for a texture compound to put in my hopper? Is there a standard mixture for thinning out joint compound for wall texture? Like one part water to one part compound, or something to this effect? Or should I just look for some type of consistency in the mixture after thinning it out? I'm sure the pros can do it by eye, but what should this greenhorn be looking for? I'm not exactly sure of the style of texture I'm looking for yet (or if this matters for the mix). I thought I'd experiment on some old drywall first, and hopefully make my mistakes there!
Any help is greatly appreciated!

You have to get your mud really thin. I've never measured the exact water to mud ratio. You want to get it thin enough that it falls easily of whatever you are mixing it with. Like pancake batter. If you have it to thick it won't spray out of the hopper.

There is no need to use a test piece of sheet rock. When you put it on your wall, if you don't like it, just scrape it off prior to drying and start over again. What you see when it is wet is what you get when it is painted. There are a lot of textures to pick from. Putting the mud on the wall is just the first step.
