Can anyone give me the pros and cons on that "cement siding" as opposed to the hardboard that has been used for years.

I can tell you I would'nt use "hardboard" siding on any house I owned. Been there, done that, but missed out on the class action suit.

I agree with Davef15, I wouldn't use hardboard siding on my house either; seen too many problems. I did some research on fiber-cement siding a couple years ago when I was designing a 3 season porch addition for my house. It looked good, so I used it. Good resistance to rot, holds paint very well. If it holds up well in the next several years, I intend to use it when I re-side my house. The only thing I didn't like is that it really raises a cloud of dust when you saw it and I went through a ton of blades.
