Outside Corners

I am attempting to repaint a room, and virtually all of the outside corners are showing bare bead. Is there a magic trick to covering this with the joint compound? (I am hitherto making quite a mess!)

Do you mean that the end or "bead" part is showing? Or is the nailing flange showing as well? If it is just the end, paint right over it. If the flange part is showing or cracked make sure it is nailed securely. You may want to put some drywall tape over it as well. Then apply two to three coats of mud over it using an eight and ten inch knife. Sand and paint.
