my living room has two walls with approx. 14 inches of "duct work" ( iam not sure what is behind this beam) on it . i would like to place an armoire against the wall but it will not fit because of the duct work. would it be possible to cut into the duct work, so i can fit this armoire. thank you

Sounds like some retrofitted duct work added to the exterior surface of the wall.
You may mess up your heating and cooling system, if you cut it out of the system.
Where does the duct work go?
Supply? Return?
