Question Replacing natural gas control valve

My Ruud water heater gas control valve (thermostat) has gone bad. I purchased a replacement valve that was supposed to work ( both are Robertshaw units), however the old valve has 2 wires and the new one has 3. What do you do with the third wire? Everything else seems the same.
