Really NOise Water Heater

I have a Sears Kenmore Water gas heater that was installed in 1999. It has a " self cleaning roto swirl cold water inlet tube" .

The tanks makes a rattling noise when any hot water is being drawn from the tank. The sound gets louder the more you open a hot water tap.

I drained the tanks about 3 months ago.

To try to solve the problem the (original?)inlet nipples were replaced .
In the case of the hot water side the inlet nipple with a long anode (?, it was about 2 feet long) was removed and replaced with a short with no anode. The cold water side was short and was replaced with a short one.

After these changes the sound actually became worse.

Any recommendations?
Could it have to do with the "roto swirl" thingy.

Is there a way find out if this specific make of water heater has a problem with out a expensive service call?

Thanks for any advise you may provide.

The dip tube is not the cause of the problem. Roto-Swirl describes the design of the dip-tube, which instead of going down like a straight dip tube like most, it actually curls around the bottom and has drilled holes at an angle to keep the debri that normally settles in the tank waterborn to prevent buildup.

State Industries made all the water heaters for Sears until recently when A.O. Smith bought State.

Sounds like the shutoff valve might be to blame, possibly high water pressure. Check to see what your water pressure is.
