Expansion tank??
I have a twenty-something year old American brand 40 gallon electric water heater. Its works fine and there's no evidence of leakage. Should I be worried that it's so ancient? Should I do a pre-emptive strike and replace it even though it works?
Also an installer told me that an expansion tank is required by code. I question the need in my case because there's already an expansion tank as part of the well system. Who's right?

A call to the local code office will give you the correct answer. There are so many State and local codes that we cannot know all of them. As far as replacing the heater, I would start saving for a new one. You have the time to shop around for the best one for your needs. 20 years is a long time for a water heater. Good luck.
