Water Heater trips Circuit Breaker

My water heater keeps tripping its switch in the circuit breaker box. It's done this several times. My water heater is 10, 15 years old or more. Could this be a bad heating element or what? Thanks in advance. jcritchie

I have a 50gal gas direct vent water heater...It is located in my unfinished basement which does get a little cool in the winter. Is it worth it to wrap a water heater in an insulated blanket? thanks Doug
