Turn water heater off to save energy?

I have (I believe) an electric water heater in the garage and am trying to find ways to reduce costs. I'm virtually never at home during the day, so would it make sense to just turn off the heater when I leave? That way, it doesn't try to maintain a constant supply of hot water, I'm assuming. Or would this make sense at all - when I get home in the evening would it have to expend that much more energy to heat up the water to adequate levels?

If it is electric, it may have one or two heating elements. If it has two, one maintains the heat while the other only comes on when new cold water comes in and it really needs two elements. I do not think turning it off will save that much. Also, when you get home and want hot water, you will be waiting about an hour while BOTH elements are using energy to heat the water. You may save a little bit by turning the temp on the heater down a little while you are at work. Good luck.
