Exclamation Temperature Spike

Our water has suddenly spiked to boiling hot, even though I had not touched the temperature setting since the water heater was installed (three years ago?). Yesterday, I turned the setting down just a bit, and now the water is cold; readjusted it again, and it's back to boiling. Can I fix this myself?

I would probably replace the thermostat/hi temp switch just because (if electric.) Is it a dual element electric? Single element? Gas?

Thanks for your response! In reply: it's a dual element electric.
