Pilot Light Keeps going out

I have a 50 gallon Kenmore gas water heater (model # 153.330551) . The pilot light keeps going out intermittently.
I replaced the thermo couple (standard Home Depot Honeywell replacement) but to no avail. The new thermo couple did make lighting the pilot light more reliable. But the pilot light still goes out every now and then. I think it happens after the burner is turned off.
Any other suggestions?

When you put the new T/C in did you clean the pilot venturi good ? The T/C get red from the pilot ? The burner clean ? burn good?

When I replaced the TC, the only area I cleaned was the pile of ashes sitting on top of the burner( all three parts come out together) . The pitot flame is about an inch long. The top 1.4 inch of the TC is red hot. The burner, which looked pretty clean when I had it out, puts out a strong blue flame.

Pilot has not gone out for 24 hours. Maybe the new TC did the trick.

Exhaust fan constant, no hot water

I have a gas water heater, about 3 years old. Never had a problem until recently, we called our water heater technician to come and fix it, and he said it was something in our house causing the problem and was therefore, no warranty. He said it was something in the house feeding cold water back into the hot lines or something? So we called a plumber, and he said something about old faucets messing up and they can cause this problem, he replaced one faucet he thought looked bad and it worked for about 6 months or so. Recently it starting having this same problem again, and our house is so old and poorly constructed apparently, that no other taps have manual shutoffs they are all hard soldered in place. So I cut off one of the oldest looking faucet supply lines, and soldered on two manual shut offs and turned them off. The water heater ran fine for about a month. Now, the exhaust fan keeps running and running, will not shut off and the water is luke warm at best. I check the thermostat, it is set to 120 and i reset it, flipped breakers ect. Am I really going to have to rip out every sink in the house and install shutoffs, or does anyone have some insight into this problem.. I'm dying over here..Read More

Water heater venting problem

In my utility room (ground floor on slab) I have a 13 year old gas boiler and a 2 year old gas water heater (atmospheric draft). The boiler (which has a power damper in the flue) has a 6" vent which runs vertical for about a foot, then approx 45% to a union. The water heater has a 3" vent which runs approx 8" vertical, then some very minor angles to the union. The union merges the 3" and 6" ducts into a 7" duct that runs vertical into the attic and then approx 45% in the attic until near the roof line, where it goes vertical out the roof. I have had this set-up for 15 years (through 2 water heaters) with no downdraft problems. Recently I noticed a significant downdraft under the water heater draft hood when it fires up and escalated levels of carbon monoxide on my alarms. I checked the vent from the roof and the utility room fresh air feeds (one 12 inches from the floor and one on the ceiling - both get air from attic) and found no obstructions. The roof vent cap is also ok. I tried smoke and match tests under the water heater vent hood with the boiler on/off and the water heater on/off and it is hit or miss if the smoke/flame goes up the vent. When the unit does backdraft, there is a very acrid smell and you can see some condensation around the draft hood. Any suggestions.
