pilot light on water heater keeps going out

my parents have a 2 year old gas water heater...

the pilot keeps going out after a period of time...they had someone come out last night about 8:00 pm to relight it...

now it is 9:00 am...it has gone out again...

any ideas on why the pilot keeps going out???

seeing as the heater is 2 years old, it should have a sealed combustion chamber and a piezo igniter. if that's the case, it should also have some sort of high temp. shut off. what brand water heater is this?

the service tech that came out just relit the heater and didn't change anything? did they charge for this "service"?

Removing water heater for flooring replacement

I need to temporarily remove a gas water heater to take up and replace some laminate flooring. This is what I think I need to do based on the connections. 1) Turn off the gas with the shutoff valve, remove the connection that goes to the pilot light shutoff valve. 2) Remove the hot and cold connections at the top of the water heater. 3) Remove the connection to the pressure relief valve. It seems easy enough, but I've never done it before. Did I miss anything?Read More

Need help removing Sears Power Miser 8 bottom heating element

Hello, Can anyone help me with my dilemma? I have a Sears Power Miser 8 with a lower and upper element and red indicator light that signals when there is not enough hot water for a dishwashing, etc.... Simply plut, it lights up when the top element goes on. Normally, we virtually never see this light, but, now it is on nearly all the time and there is only approximately 10 gallons of available hot water. I tested for power at the thermosstat with a wireless tester and I got confirmation that there is ample power there, so, I truly believe that the source of the problem is with the lower element. This is where the trouble begins. First, I had one hell of a time draining the darn tank!! There was quite a bit of sediment on the bottom and draining was rather slow at best. I tried to add a little more water to speed things along and ended up stopping the flow all together!!! The tank only drained a drop at a time for the next two days! After reading a few posts here about back-flushing, I improvised and took a 4 foot section of garden hose and attached it to the drain valve. I simply blew into the hose with all my might and after a few attempts, I managed to dislodge whatever was causing the obstruction. It ran much better, although, it wasn't the fastest. I noticed that the lower the hose is in relation to the tank, the quicker the water flow. Which has left me up to this point. I can't get the gosh-darn lower screw-type element to come off!!!! AAAARRRGGG!!! Very, very frustrating, to say the least. I have a 1 and 1 half inch element wrench that you use a screwdriver with as well as a 1 and 1/2 inch socket with a breaker bar. Neither one works. There is simply not enough room on the nut to get a good grip with the wrench, I have tried liquid wrench and tapping on it with a hammer to hopefully break it loose, but, to no avail. The wrench just slips off when I put pressure on it. I am almost to the point of trying a vise grip, but, that would be a last resort!!! Had anyone else had this much trouble removing a lower element? Can anyone advise me what I could try next??? I am at my wits end!!!! Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!
