My electric water heater intermittently trips its electric breaker. What is causing this?

The usual cause is a heater element going bad. It won't get better, so time to check/replace the elements. Make sure you have the correct elements for your heater, check the label on the tank. Since you have to drain the tank to replace the elements, i would replace both. Make sure the power is off, and remember, that water is HOT when you drain it(from the bottom valve). Don't shut off the water for the first few minutes of draining. This will help flush accumulated deposits from the tank.
