Tankless water heater venting

I want to install a Paloma indoor 7.4 series tankless water heater. I would like to use the existing venting used with the conventional heater I'm replacing. It has a 3" galvinized sheet metal pipe to the ceiling at which point it is adapted to a 4" gsm pipe up through to the roof jack. I would replace the 3" portion with a double wall 4" pipe getting me past the ceiling joist. I really don't want to spend an additional 300 bucks on top of the cost of the new tankless for a venting installation kit if i don't have to. Will my idea work. Thanks Harryrdgrs

Check your specific installation manual, on the Rheem/Paloma website. BUT, in general, tankless water heaters require stainless steel flue pipe. You cannot use existing flues. The only exception might be if it was power vented.

I checked the install manual for the Paloma indoor 7.4: It clearly states that ONLY UL approved Cat. III stainless steel vent pipe may be used. NO OTHER material is allowed.

I believe this requirement is due partly to the heat involved, but even more is due to the highly corrosive nature of the flue gasses from the large burners/

You can't use your existing vent with that heater:

I have 5 tankless heaters instated, here's what I've learned about performing a successful install:
