Sounds like the burner kicked on. Or are you saying you believe it is excessive? What brand and is it?

I have a similar question regarding my new water heater. I just had a Reliance 40 gallon natural gas water installed and when the burner turns on it seems to burn/heat louder than my old one. When the water heater starts to heat, do some models sound louder than others? The pilot doesn't go out and I always have hot water.

A typical cause of a "roraring" gas burner is an excessive amount of primary air being drawn into the burner because the air shutter is open too far.

Can't recommend you adjest that yourself, since Bad Things can happen if it's improperly adjusted. I'd contact the installer who put in the water heater and ask them to check and adjust it, though.
