Surface ignitor won't light automatically

I have a Richmond Powervent gas water heater. It has a hot surface ignitor. When the water cools (either from time or use) to where it should ignite, it doesn't. The water heater begins running but no glow from the ignitor.

If I turn the ignitor off and then back on manually, it DOES beginning glowing, and it fires up. It stays lit until the water is completely heated so I wouldn't think it's the themocoupler.

Any thoughts?

My suspicions is it's not the ignitor.

Does this water heater have a control box on the front (with the on/off switch) that says "Honeywell" with about 6 or 7 wires coming off the bottom?

No...there are 7 wires coming out of a box that says Robert Shaw on it. Also, now it won't fire at all. When I reset it, the ignitor glows but won't fire, like it's not getting any gas.

It's solved. It was the valve which has been replaced.

Glad you're ok now. I was suspecting it was the valve. These integrated gas valves can be problematic at times.
