Recommended Brands of Gas Water Heaters

I have a Whirlpool Gas Water Heater (model number starts with UG) that is less than a year old and is having problems with the pilot staying lit. I know this is a common problem with this model (and by the way, my thermocouple is working OK) - I'd like to get rid of it and get something else. Are the GE ones at Home Depot any better? Or are there any other ones that can be bought by consumers and installed as a DIY project?

Your local gas company probably has water heaters for sale.
I have a Bradford White power vent model that has served me well for almost 13 years.
It does not have a pilot light.

The ones at Home Depot are built by Rheem/Ruud and are reportedly decent heaters. The Whirlpools are built by American Water Heater Corp and I have to presume they are just rebadged American Water Heaters, so I'd recommend staying away from American units. I haven't heard too many complaints about Sears Kenmore units. There are only about three companies making water heaters in the U.S.
