Reliance 606 water heater problems.

I just purchased a home with a Reliance brand water heater installed. The water heater was built in 2008.

My problem is, the pilot light went out. When I re-lit the pilot, water started to drip onto the burner almost immediately. Once it finishes its heating cycle and the burner shuts off, the water extinguishes the pilot. I am unable to re-light the pilot for an hour or so.

I got in contact with Reliance's customer service and they suggested that is most likely condensation caused by heating cold water. They however, did not offer a solution to prevent the condensation from extinguishing the pilot.

Is there anything I could do to fix this before I go out and spend the cash on a new one/repair?

I watched my water heater run through it's cycle earlier. It doesn't really seem that the condensation is extinguishing the pilot. After the water had time to heat up, it stopped dripping onto the burner. However, the pilot was still out when I checked on it after the burner went out.

Any idea what the issue may be? I appreciate any response. Thanks.
