no hot water

Hi, I have a gas water heater problem. For the past week or so, the heater is is not producing real hot water, only lukewarm water. I checked the pilot and it is on. The thermostat is set at nearly the hightest temperature but the burner won't turn on even though the water temperature is apparently low. When I turn the thermostat up some more (beyond its highest mark) the burner will turn on and we would get a tank of hot water. But after the tank is used up, we get cold water again. I have been playing the trick with the thermostat each time we need hot water. But it is certainly not a long-term solution. What is the problem? Is the thermostat faulty? Can I replace the thermostat by myself? As you can tell from my screen name, I am not too handy, but I thought if it is a rather simple problem, I would give it a try.

Thanks a bunch!

My first guess is that the thermostat is bad. I don't think that you should try to replace it, if you are not sure of what you are doing it could be dangerous, sorry.
