Popping or Tapping Sound when Heating

I have a 50 gal electric water heater that has begun making a tapping or popping sound when the heating element is on. The unit is about 10 years old and seems to working fine except for this problem. Can you suggest what might be causing this sound? If so, what might be the procedure to solve the problem?

thats caused by a sediment build up on the bottom of the tank. once water reacehes 120 sediment "removes" itself from the water and then solidifies at the bottom in chunks. when you try to heat through this mess, is when you get popping and cracking.its pretty much unfixable unless you have a hand hole at the bottom of the tank. its time to replace that beast. if you already have high voltage their switch over to a heat pump water heater.
