You rented a gas water heater? Or did you rent a house with a gas water heater? Please clarify! I can't imagine renting a water heater.

I had a similar (but different situation). The wet insulation will eventually dry out. Is this a standing pilot? Is the pilot burning?

First, try replacing the thermouple. Then, if that doesn't help, then maybe the gas valve. In the meantime, based on my experience, I would resist buying a new heater.

What level did the water get to? Possibly your homeowner's insurance could cover it?
