Water heater tank leaks basics.

In my experience, a water heater leaks at the following: elements, inlet/outlet fitting, pressure relief valve, or drain fitting.

Anywhere else constitutes a replacement job, right? I think my tank has let go. I have a leak somewhere in the top under the insulation, up and left of the upper element.

I don't mind the prospect of this task, but I want to "verify the lie" before I get started and all my neighbors are at work.

How old is the WH? In most instances where you have wet insulation around the crown, and no where else, it could be "taps".
