Need hot wAter plzzzz

This is my first time on here so plz bare with me,
i need very simple advise.
My pilot on my hot water heater withch by the way is not even a year old anyways we tryed to relight but it won't so this morning we tryed again and the pilot light lit but only stayed lit when we held the button but we t out when we released it and when we do get the pilot lit we can't get it to kick the burner on if that makes any since at all. Now we can't even get the pilot to come back on it like things Are not connecting with each other plz help me if possible I'm sure it doesn't help when I'm stupid when it comes to these things

Your gas valve should have three positions..... OFF - PILOT - ON

You would put it to PILOT and hold it down when lighting the pilot.
Keep it held down for 45 seconds.
After 45 seconds release the knob and turn it to ON.

If the pilot still wont stay lit you may have a thermocouple issue.
Since your water heater is under a year old......it should be under warranty too.

I will add to PJmax's directions that you should hold the button down for about 45 seconds after the pilot is lit.
