best residential hot water heater brand, not on demand, opinion wanted

I have a 25+ year old State brand water heater, the ol' girl is starting to gurgle so I had better change it. My local supplier who sold State heaters just went out of business. What out there is a good unit now a days for a 40 gallon residential?

I have been offered a 6 year Reliant which he says is a division of State.

Find your local furguson dealer. They sell to the public.

So what do you think about the AO Smith GCV40-300 Pro Max? I see many good reviews, and a few regarding flame outs. I'm seeing it locally for $385, close to your estimate, more expensive online.

I agree A.O. Smith is great and lasts a long time. I have a GE water heater that is 15 years old finally started to see dirty water from the tank going bad so my plumber is going to use A.O. Smith. I looked on their website and the particular model you mention seems to be their better quality water heater. I have A.O. Smith in my rental and it has been doing fine and is the only tank my plumber uses.
