Hot Water Heater Leaking Something From Top

What is this oozing out of the holes through the top? It almost looks like insulation or something.

It looks like calcium/limestone and rust. How old is the tank? There should be a date code on it somewhere.

On top of the leaking, and even though you have dielectric unions, you have some electrolysis going on there. Is there a union on the other side?

Possible they melted the plastic metal to metal protector in the union when they soldered.

I would say the anode is spent as well and that heater is on borrowed time......
