hot water heater control valve problems

HELP....I can't take the cold water anymore. I am a homeowner but general contractor. I have a 10 year old AO Smith Promax 74 gallon water heater with Honeywell smartvalve controller. (I hope it was OK to use the manufacturers name)

Initial symptom... blower would come on, igniter would light, gas would come on then in 2 seconds flame would burn out. Error message on valve said to replace the smartvalve

I replaced the smartvalve at a cost of $200. Hooked it up now get this...

blower comes on, igniter starts to light, then blower shuts off and I get 3 flashes of the error light, which means airflow proving switch or obstruction in the airflow of some sort.

I replaced pressure switch...didn't help. I took off blower motor, made sure vent was open...did not help. I have had 3 plumbers look at it, and they all say the valve has to be bad. I don't think so though...somehow the smartvalve is being told to shut down once the valve is told to open the gas to the igniter.

Any thoughts? PLEASE HELP

Is there a printed circuit control board? If not, what do you think it telling the valve to close?

The Honeywell "smart valve" is a piece of junk. At ten years of age your water heater has met its useful lifespan. Don't toss good money down a rat hole.
