GE (Rheem) Gas Hot Water Heater - Service??

I purchased a GE - Rheem Gas 50 gallon Hot water heater from Home Depot about 3 years ago. We have 3 people in the family. I have heard that today's hot water heaters do not last much longer than 10 years. Is this typically true for todays hot water heaters? What are 2 good Preventative Maintenance things can I do for this heater I live in Texas.

The instructions have that info - mostly just drain it once in a while.

If you have very hard water getting a water softener may prolong the life of all water using appliances.

I have read that changing out / replacing the anode will help , but to me , most of the time that is not practical ?

And as has been discussed , draining the tank periodically .

God bless
