hot water heater keeps tripping

Our hot water heater has a little red button that keeps tripping, and we have to reset it, what causes this? The hot water heater is not very old, only maybe 1 -2 years old.

Usually when a t stat goes bad and the heater gets too hot... After you reset it do you notice extremely hot water?

A defective lower heating element can also cause the overheat problem.

The little red button is a high temperature limit control and trips when the heater overheats. If it trips frequently, it'll probably need to be replaced once you find and fix the reason for the overheating, they don't withstand the frequent tripping without becoming weak and prone to nuisance tripping.
