Pilot issues on our water heater

I have a question about the pilot light on an older water heater. When the burner comes on, does the pilot tube stay open or is it supposed to close while the burner is running? Also, I noticed I was able to light my pilot while in the "Pilot" position without having to press down the button.

The pilot light should be on all the time.

If the pilot light (and the burner) had been off for only a minute or two when you came back to relight it then you would not have to hold the button down.

But if the pilot had been off for a long time and you could relight it without holding the button down then you have a malfunction that is letting gas from the pilot tube out into the room air all the while the pilot has gone out.
