Fixed my water heater.

First I like to thank you. The information I read in this forum helped me replace my thermocouple on my ao smith water heater and helped me with the issue of cleaning the disk at the bottom to keep my pilot light on.

My question is I have a model GCV 40 100 serial number J05A140747 .When we cleaned the disk at the bottom I found it was broken there is a big chunk missing from it and the rest is cracked. Is this a big issue? Will it effect the water heater in anyway? Will it decrease the life of the water heater?
Thanks

Welcome to the forums...

That disk is essentially a fire break of sorts. With it cracked/broken etc the safety feature of the unit is bypassed..

I would replace the unit with a new model. 10 years old your just on borrowed time.

My wife took this picture before we cleaned it. So i guess it is really broke. I think it has been like that for 2 years since a home warranty person cam and fixed it last time.
Again thanks for all the information.

Where is this heater located? Is it on a stand a minimum of 18 inches above the floor?

I'm wondering where the broken off pieces went.

The water heater will keep working normally.
