Welcome to the best DIY forum on the Internet!

Yeah, it should be an easy fix although describing the fix over the Internet may be difficult. Several pictures of where the water service enters the house and also the connections at the water heater may help us to help you.

Pictures of a limited size may be directly uploaded to this forum although it is often best to host the pictures on a photo hosting site such as photobucket.com or imgur.com (many others as well) and then post the public URLs here. Do not attempt to use tinypic as the forum specifically rejects tinypic.

Was part of the handy plumbing work replacing the water heater just before you moved in?

Is it a Double-Wide ?

I've seen them get mixed up underneath when they go to put the two halves together wrong.

I know of one where the Hot Water in the Toilet Tank(s) caused to Gaskets and Wax Ring to fail.

Can you tell where and how the plumbing was misconnected? Like some diagonal criss crossing in the piping within 5 feet of the water heater. (Plumbing is normally nearly horizontal or vertical.)

THe fix would probably involve piping all within 5 feet of the water heater.

Connecting the water heater itself backwards will not cause this reversal to happen, although there are some very rare and obscure circumstances that could cause a backwards connected water heater to self destruct.
