Hot Water Heater Install

So I will be installing a new hot water heater tomorrow and I had a couple questions.

1. Should I buy a new expansion tank to go with the new Heater?

2. Should I add a cold water shutoff valve before the expansion tank.

3. I want to use stainless-steel hoses to connect to the heater instead, would you recommend that?

Only if its bad.. If its still good just make sure to check the air charge in it when the water heater is being replaced.. Add air if neccesary..

The air charge should equal the static pressure of the homes water supply..

No.. There should be no means to isolate the expansion tank from the water heater per code... But adding a valve to the hot side may be beneficial...

No.. They are only rubber hoses with SS braiding around them. Copper rigid pipe is far superior..

I meant a shutoff valve right as the copper pipe comes out of the wall on the incoming cold water before it hits the expansion tank.

There is a shutoff there already coming out of the wall from what I can see..

If you mean replace it with a new one, no.. Unless its an old style valve it would be replaced by a ball valve...

Is an expansion tank necessary on an electric hot water heater? Mine was installed without one and no problems for 20yrs.....

installed if there is a prv installed on the main... This makes the system a closed system...

Water heater not keeping water at desired temp

I've got a State Select 40 gal natural gas water heater that was bought new in 2013. It seems like its not keeping the water at or near the temperature setting. Sometimes when we go to shower, the water may or may not be hot... maybe warm. Then again it could be at proper temp. Eventually, I though, maybe the thermostat isnt coming on as soon as it should as the water temp drops. Therefore, its letting the water temp drop too low before the thermostat tells the burner to kick on & heat the water. So, I started going to the tub, turn only the hot water on, run out about 5 or 10 gallons, which would run more fresh cold water into the water heater, therefore kicking on the burner. In a few minutes I go back & take a hot shower. I think the water temp is dropping 10 degrees or more before the thermostat tells the burner to kick on. I do have the temp turned up pretty high because I was not getting hot water. There is only two of us so, we only wash clothes etc once per week, on the weekends. So, during the week, we don't use hot water very much, especially during the day. Since we dont use hot water, the water temp drops & the thermostat doesnt come on as soon as it should, allows the water temp to drop too low before the thermostat kicks on to heat the water to the desired temp, therefore, we have only warm water. My question is, is there a way for me to adjust the amount that the water temp drops before the burner kicks on. And/or, do you think that's my problem? Maybe another issue? Hi All. Hoping for a bit of advice on how stop my hot water smelling bad. I have a GSW natural gas hot water heater. (Model G640S31FV-06) So about 10 years old it seems by the model number. I had been noticing the hot water emitting that nasty, sulpher-egg odor. Looking in to it I believed this to be a problem with an aging anode rod. Bacteria created with the water reacting with the magnesium - blah, blah, blah.... I drained some water from the tank and swapped the anode rod with a new one I picked up at HD. While it was open I poured in some hydrogen peroxide to kill the existing bacteria. (something that was recommended to me) The old rod came out very pitted and corroded. So it did its job I guess.... OK....for a couple of days....Then a week later not only has the smell not gone away, but I think it's worse. HD only offered one standard type of rod so no idea if this might be an issue. I'm on city water in Toronto. Its known to be clean and safe (as much as city water can be I suppose). Normal levels of chlorine I'd imagine. I've never noticed signs of it being abnormally hard by way of deposits. My humidifier evaporators barely show any deposits on their yearly replacement. So what do you think? Different material anode? Heater shot? Gremlins? All advice welcome....Read More
