Oil water heater problem

I have a 50 gallon tank-style oil hot water heater installed in 2002. Last week I found a small puddle (approx. 12 inches in diameter) partly under the water heater. It has since dried leaving a ring of white powder and I have seen nothing since. I have hot water without issues - ample temperature and seemingly unending.

Here's my questions
1. I assume I have a failing tank due to the age but are there other issues I can check myself?
2. Based on my facts, is my tank likely to fail completely soon, creating a mess in the basement or will this just get progressively worse?
3. I want to find a quality product and hire someone to handle this. I'm trying to learn about products but have been unable to find oil hot water heaters. Please suggest brands I can research.
