Water heater warranty

I'm looking at the warranty of a Reliance gas water heater. (I don't presently have one.) The warranty is void if the water is desalinated or de-ionized. Why?

I believe that pure, de-ionized water is potentially more reactive - maybe because the water is unbuffered, and the pH can vary widely? Maybe that warranty exclusion would include water that is treated by a reverse-osmosis system, that removes all minerals? Anyway, the warranty applies to glass-lined heaters, which shouldn't be a problem, I think.

Not a direct answer to your warranty question, but I have installed a lot of water heaters and I avoid American at all cost. Reliance is made by American. I just replaced a 2012 installed Reliance in my rental. IMHO poor products and not a bargain.
