Best brand of electric water heater
Have an 80 gallon AO Smith electric hot water heater from 2003 that is approaching end of life.
Looking to downsize to a 50-55 gallon.
Looking at the reviews for Rheem and AO Smith are very scary.
Is it basically a crap shoot these days that you don’t get a unit that leaks within a year?

The minimum warranty is generally 6 years so a leak within a year should be covered. Check out Bradford-White water heaters.

You'll see good reviews and bad reviews for all the water heaters. I've always preferred A.O. Smith for gas and Rheem for electric. There are so many variables that reviews can be deceiving. Many times leaks are not from a tank fault but a defective installation. Water quality and mineral content also play an important role in longevity.
Most electric water heaters use the same exact electrical parts which just leaves the tank as the issue.
