No spark in hot water heater

Good day. New to the forum.

my water heater pilot stopped working and now the pilot won’t light. No spark in the ignitor when i look in the little window but there is a spark from ignitor switch to connector. I think the thermal switch is broke and therefore keeping me from getting gas and a spark. Anyway i can test this? The thermal
switch button just sits there and doesn’t spring back when pushed. The heater is an AOsmith with a honeywell control panel

Thank you.

The water heater is a AO Smith HCV 40 300. I believe it is 9 years old as the date on the label says 2011.

i think i need to change the burner assembly coz when i took it off, i couldn’t get a spark in the igniter when it is connected. The igniter itself when out of the control panel sparks fine but when connected it does not spark at all.

Make sure the thermocouple nut is snug on the bottom of the gas valve.
That's not a complete model number.

There may be a TCO protector in the system that is open.

Looks to me that there is something wrong with the ignitor if you do not see a spark in the little window but you do see a spark someplace else when you press the ignitor button.

Also the ignitor and the button need to make a clean firm contact with the other metal parts where they are snapped or pressed or screwed into place
