water heater timer

I have a Bradford White Model URG240T6N water heater with a Honeywell heat controller pictured below. Can I put a timer on this thing? Does the pilot go out with a timer, or how does that work? What is the "com" on the bottom half of the controller? Can I connect a timer to that?

There are both mechanical and electrical controls that can be added. If you search online for the timer you are considering you can probably find the installation instructions. Here is one I found which mechanically rotates the temperature setting dial.

That's a pretty sophisticated and expensive gas valve.
Dane's method is about all you could safely do to that valve.

I ended up buying one of these, which attaches to the com port on that gas valve.
