another iron bacteria question

Our water has high iron, rust and iron bacteria (recent water testing is at the lab. right now), the iron filter seems to gets out the rust and red water, but even with the iron bacteria shouldn't we still have soft water coming from the faucets if the softner is working properly? We question that the new softner resin may be damaged. Iron out has been flushed through it once. I know the iron bacteria has to be killed(I've read volumes on it all) that is our next set of steps after we get the water tests back.
When flushing a water softner with iron out does it clean the resin tank of iron build up or just the controls on top of the unit?

I've used a blowtorch to loosen them up with a medium sized putty knife to slowly scrape them up. It stinks and will "wear you out" but works eventually.
