Hot water stinks

My Dad's gas fired water heater produces a foul odor in the water, hot only. Cold has no odor. Does the gas water heater have an anode or do we need to kill some bacteria with clorine bleach? What is the best procedure for doing the chlorine thing?

Set the temperature up to 140 degrees and see if this corrects the problem.

Once the smell stops, return the tank to your existing temperature setting.

Is there smell coming from specific faucets.......or all hots?

The smell comes from all hot water faucets.
Thanks for the tip. We will try that before any more involved method.
