I'm new to the well water/water softener world. We bought our current house with a water softener (one tank) that was new in 1991. I don't think it's doing a good job and I called the company but they don't help much. Here's what I'm trying to fix: 1. Water Hardness of 50 (tested 3 months ago) 2. High level of iron - I don't know the measurement but when I fill the kiddie pool with 2 inches of water it is cloudy brown and then there will be a red film at the bottom. This is from the unsoftenened outdoor faucet so I imagine some of it is getting in the house. 3. I get an egg smell from the cold water (only) about every 9 months - then I have to bleach out the well and faucets - using the water softener company directions. Hate doing it. SO, with that, do I stay with a one tank or get the dual tank? Some companies have a separate system just to take out the iron and then another system to soften. Is there just one system that does all? Also, some say the water softener can prevent the egg smell, some say no - I have to bleach it. Any help would be appreciated. I've asked my neighbors but they don't have a clue. Thanks! Momofthree

Are there any special descaling solutions for descaling drinking water supply or is it ok to use something like vinegar. I used to have hard water but installed a softener about 1-1/2 years ago. Recently I started getting white particles in my refrigerator drinking water (presumebly scale that was now breaking off and travelling down the water line). Started trying to find out where it was coming from and after pulling the water system apart concluded that it was the water fill valve. Replaced that and also pulled out and flushed the water holding tank. Things are much better but there are still tiny particles in the water and not really sure how to ged rid of it short of changing all the tubing or flushing with descaling solution. Anyone else had this problem.
