kinetico quad 50 help

I have a Kinetico Quad 50 that needs the resin/carbon replaced and the service guys want over 400.00 dollars to do this, this seems high to me and i was wondering is it possible to do it myself and if so how much of the resin/carbon do i need to buy and how do you take apart the tanks? Thanks.

Quality resin can run between $110 to $180 per cubic foot with the fine mesh resin at the top of the price scale.

A cubic foot of carbon runs around $100.

Buying the resin and carbon is the easy thing. Then you need the tools and the knowledge to do the job. Unless you know what you're doing that's a pretty expensive softener to risk damaging.

That quote of $400 for labor at your location incuding the resin and carbon with a warranty sounds pretty fair to me. They'll also include checking for proper operation of the control valve and brine float assembly that price.

Thanks, the only problem is for that 400.00 price is i have to take it to them which is an hour away or they charge more, they are the only service in our area.

The resin and carbon are gonna cost you at least $225 and maybe closer to $300 and it'll take the tech at least a couple hours to do the job, maybe more. $50 an hour is pretty cheap for a competent tech. It sounds fair to me.

I wouldn't remove a softener and take it anywhere. I'd want the tech at my location to remove the softener, do the service, and re-install the softener. That way, they'd warranty everything they did.

How much more to come to you? Tell them you don't want to risk damaging the softener during travel. Perhaps a little negotiating is in order?

its only 4 years old but the city i just moved from uses alot of chlorine in their water so i guess thats why it needs changed already, also i should note that even though the cost of 400.00 sounds reasonable, i can't afford it as i don't have a steady income yet. and would really like to do it myself if possible if someone could give details. Thanks

It's not a very hard process to do......the tanks spin off of each other with relative ease.......buy the resin and the carbon........dump them out..refill it........keep in mind you need to ensure NONE of the material is introduced into the distributor tubes or the control head itself........why are you changing the resin.....has it broken down?.......in the quad system when the resin breaks down due to chlorine the water flow is completely choked off.........my area has pretty high municipal chlorine........average 3.0ppm.......most resin survives for 15 to 19 years with no carbon

JP59,

If you're gonna DIY here's a great place to buy the carbon and resin. FREE shipping and it is HEAVY stuff ...

Here's carbon ...

http://ohiopurewaterco.com/shop/customer/home.php?cat=317

and here's resin ...

http://ohiopurewaterco.com/shop/customer/home.php?cat=321

You just need to figure out how much of what you need and give them a call.

Yes i lost all water flow, when i bypassed the softner the water returned and when i told the service guys they said thats what is wrong. Do i need to remove the head on the one tank or can i leave it? ie the part with the manual regeneration screw. Thanks

Before I made the decision to rebed the resin, I would look to see if possibly anything else happened.......old PVC glu around the distributor (if plumbing was ever glued in) or maybe a broken interlock..........you have to remove the head in order to remove and replace the contents.....when you seperate the tanks, you will be able to dump out the contents from the lower tanks................but you have to take the head off the main tank and the remote base off the remote tank.
