Water Softenere Constantly Running Water

A few days ago, my water softener started to constantly run water. I can hear water continuously running to the softener and then water running to the drain. I'll admit I'm not an expert on how the softener works and whether or not this is normal, but I'm guessing it is not normal since I don't recall it doing this before. It is a GE softener and it is about 5-6 years old. Any ideas?

First idea... sticky threads at top of forum:

click here for troubleshooting guides for Sears and similar softeners

Second idea... search the forum. you'll find more posts regarding problems with Sears softeners than you can read. Many have had the same problem you're having.

Usually a seal kit, rotor, and venturi kit resolves the problem. Before you spend a bunch of money on parts this would be the time to consider replacing your Sears softener with a more reliable industry standard softener that costs about the same as a Sears and will last at least a decade longer.

Put the softener in bypass so you're not running water to drain and driving up your water bill. You'll have hard water till you resolve this issue.
