is water hard or soft?
I have city water. The water is the kind that when you take a shower you feel like you can't get the soap off or when you shave you feel like there's a film of shaving cream left.
It suds up fine, but you feel like you can't get the soap off. Also when you wash, there are little clots of soap stuck to the clothes.
Some years ago, I asked our former public works director why that is, and he said there is no surface alkali in it.
Our current director never returns calls.
I don't know if that is hard or soft water.
I thought it was hard, so I tried putting baking soda in the washer, also borax. Neither made a difference.
I had company for dinner and one person was washing up and said "This water is so soft, you feel like you can't get the soap off."
Can anyone tell me what the deal is? And what to do about it? I really hate it.
Thanks so much!

if it feels like you can't get the soap off you have soft water, you will need to use less soap in your laundry, to the best of my knowledge there is no way to fix your water if it is city water without a distallation filter.

When I am in a city, the water tends to be hard and it takes a quarter size squirt of shampoo to get suds in my hair. If I go to my mountain cabin where there is a soft water spring, my shampoo gets reduced to the size of a dime. If you have soft city water, you are in luck. Never had the opportunity to experience that. Cut back on the amount of soaps, detergents, shampoos, etc.
Soft water tends not to contain calcium or magnesium. You can have the water tested if you want. If it's soft, you are lucky. Folks who live in hard water areas often filter out calcium and magnesium to achieve artificially softened water.

My bottle of Dawn has lasted forever at my cabin where I have a soft water spring. I've been in this city rental since November and I'm getting ready to start the third bottle. Some days my quarter size squirt of shampoo gets an extra boost. Water is hard here. You may live in an area of the country where soil and rocks are low in calcium and magnesium. You are lucky! Consider yourself blessed, cut back on detergents and soaps and consider the savings on these products.
I also notice if I stay for several days at the cabin that not only is my hair softer, but my skin is too. You may find that from a beauty standpoint, that soft water can make you look younger and more beautiful. I haven't been to my cabin since November, and I need to return for a makeover. The spring is full again with all the recent rains. When I left last fall we were in a drought and I was hauling water from the river to flush and buying jug water for French baths and keeping the kitchen and bathroom clean.
