Water Softener DIY Advice

I need to replace my water softener and plan to do it myself. I am fairly DIY capable, but was wondering are there some brands that are easier to install than others and are there any land mines I should be aware of?

My current dead softener is a 15 year old Sears I installed and fixed several times (motor, seals, ...) Based on feedback out there I don't plan to go with the Sears/Lowes/HD type softeners when replacing.

Appreciate any suggestions and recommendations.

I like the Fleck 5600 metered system. Autotrol makes a nice system as well.

Randy,

I have some experience with the Autotrol metered unit. It is very easy to install & setup. The city water hardness at my home is 10 gr/gal. I've set the Hardness to 12, set the unit to use metering only for regen, and use a Salt setting of Low. The unit processes @75 gal/day with an output of <2 gr/gal. My regenerant (Potssium) use is @80 lbs/year.
