Thanks AndyC, Can I buy any high capacity cation resin, or should I get something specific for Kinetico systems?

These are many types of resins for water treatment. For you purposes a standard-mesh cation resin will do. Most Kineticos come with a Sybron C-249 resin but other companies have types.
You can sanitize it with bleach when it is emptied.
Make sure threads are clean and use a silcon (not petroleum jelly) on the O-ring.
Inspect distributors (baskets) for breaks or holes.
Best of Luck,

Thanks. I have ordered them and should be getting it shortly. Meanwhile, what is Silcon? Is that an adhesive? And where is the O-Ring. Is that similar to a washer? I did not see any when I opened both the tanks?
Also, since I am this far, is there anything else I need to do as regular maintainance. I generally used to have the dealer come and do it for me each year?

I changed the resin last week and after that I see that the hardness is 0 on each of the tanks. Looks like the resin was indeed the problem with it being over 14 years old. It has been working well for about 4 days now. I would really like to thank AndyC, Biermech, Churlish for their time and insights without which I would not have been able to troubleshoot this issue and fix it. Thanks very much for saving me hundreds of dollars, especially when the dealer asked me to change the whole system.
