Two Dead Mice Found in Water Softener

Today my father found two dead mice in the water softener. He said they were not that decomposed but the the smell inside the softener is more than terrible! We have a Kenmore Ultra 150 softener which is a few years old. I don't know anything about water softeners and I guess I am looking for suggestions or any other information you could provide. Should we avoid our tap water? Thanks,

Boy, that's a new one. I found leaves, rocks, mud, sand and many other 'natural' elements in softeners.

Of course by 'inside the softener' you mean in the salt tank, not the softener tank, right? Mice usually go where they are being chased or where they can find food or shelter. You may have left the door open and once it, they couldn't climb out. Keep the door shut.

There are ways to santized a softener but that is usually for bacterial problems not pests. Are you familiar with that?
