Salt buildup around water softener
I have an old (it came with the house, which was built in 1994) Kenmore water softener unit.
I have noticed some salt buildup around the base of my water softener. I cleared most of it away a couple days ago, and what was left this morning was damp. I assume the problem is that my salt storage tank has a small leak in it (allowing brine to leak out; when the water evaporates it would leave salt). However, before I make a leap and order a new storage tank, are there other possibilities for the leak? I ran through a manual recharge cycle and didn't notice anything other leaking (but I don't notice the tank leaking either -- just the salt buildup).
Thanks.
Jeff

The only other way to get a salt build up like you say, is to have water driping out the overflow. If the unit is not filling up with water, you have a leak in the brine tank. 95% chance it's the tank.
